Oars for clinker-built boats, Sunday, April 19 2026
Sörmland's carving academy invites you to a meeting where we will manufacture oars. The finished oars will be donated to some boats managed by The boat team Oxelösund – Sörmland's coast and their passionate individuals. At the meeting, we will be guided by some knowledgeable boat builders, student Olle Park and teacher Pelle Nestorzon from the boat building program at Stensund Folk High School. So while we gain insight into part of boat building, we contribute to Sörmland's wooden boat culture.
The meeting takes place in Sörmland's museum's woodworking shop, where we have access to both machines and tools. We will use axes and saws, but most of the oars will be shaped with planing. Please bring your own planes, such as a good smoothing or roughing plane.
This winter, the boat team Oxelösund has taken on the task of starting to renovate some older clinker-built boats. There are several boats that need oars to be launched this spring. The Hasselö boat was towed to Oxelösund last autumn, and when work began, it turned out that this boat had a more interesting history than anticipated. Boat group Hasselö – Sörmland's coast
The work on the Hasselö boat is part of a project aimed at strengthening, preserving, and making visible Sörmland's wooden boat and coastal culture. The project is called Boat Team Sörmland's coast and is supported by Leader Sörmland's coast. Participants include several associations in Oxelösund, the Boat Building program at Stensund Folk High School in Trosa, and Sörmland's museum. About the project – Sörmland's coast
