Hauling Day – our wooden boats
Location:
Date: September 20
Time: 10:00 AM–3:00 PM
Welcome to the joint hauling day for our clinker-built wooden boats. This is a day when we help each other – many hands are needed for the work to be safe, smooth, and enjoyable.
For clinker-built wooden boats the timing for hauling is especially important. The general recommendation is to haul the boat in September or early October, and there are several reasons for this:
-
Reduced risk of frost damage – water-saturated wood can be damaged when frost arrives.
-
Controlled drying – the overlapping boards shrink as the wood dries. Early hauling reduces the risk of large cracks or before the next launching.
-
Correct winter storage time – traditionally, wooden boats are on land for at least six months.
-
Better conditions for autumn maintenance – cleaning and oiling are best done when the wood is still slightly damp.
Hauling is an important part of preserving our wooden boats – and at the same time an opportunity to meet, share knowledge, and help each other.
