Boat builder
Karl Kjellberg was a very productive boat builder and active in Trosa from 1920.
During his career, he is said to have built around a thousand boats. He took over the business from his father, Oskar Kjellberg, and thereby continued the family's boat building tradition.
Karl is also known for his self-developed skiffs, which became a model for the sailing development of the model ”Stensund Skiff” .
Activity: 1920–1977.
The difference between Karl Kjellberg's original skiffs and the modern Stensund Skiff mainly concerns the area of use and adaptation for sailing
Technical differences
Original Kjellberg Skiff:
-
- Purpose: Built primarily as a robust utility boat for fishing and transport in the Trosa archipelago.
- Construction: A pure rowing or motorboat, often without sail equipment. The focus was on buoyancy and stability in the hull shape.
- Material: Traditionally built in oak or larch using clinker technique.
- Modern Stensund Skiff:
- Sailing characteristics: The version that is built Stensund Folk High School is often equipped with centerboard and rig (sprit sail or lug sail) to function as a fast and agile sailing skiff.
- Pedagogy: While Karl Kjellberg built them for production, the Stensund Skiff is today built as part of an education that preserves the craft by combining traditional methods with modern demands for recreational sailing.
- Material choice: Today, carefully selected larch wood is often used for the planking due to its natural rot protection, often in combination with oak in the stem and keel.
Preserving the heritage
Even though the Stensund Skiff has received a centerboard and sails to suit today's recreational needs, the lines of the hull – the so-called ”Trosa type” – remain true to Karl Kjellberg's original measurements. It is often said that the Stensund Skiff is a refinement of the original skiff rather than a completely new design.
